How I discovered Tigernuts

Let me start by introducing myself - I’m Ayesha, the founder of strp’d! 🙋🏻‍♀️

After a number of years working in London, graduating with an MBA in NYC and launching a fitness business in Mumbai, in 2019 I finally returned to the city where I grew up - Lagos, Nigeria! 🌍

Whilst working in Nigeria, I discovered this incredible super-ingredient: tigernuts! Don’t be fooled by the name, Tigernuts are NOT nuts, nor do they come from tigers but in fact are nutrient-dense tubers and they sure pack in plenty of bite! 🐅 They grow underground like a sweet potato, resemble roasted chickpeas, yet contain a texture similar to almonds. Tigernuts offer a naturally sweet flavour, which tastes delicious when blended into a m•lk or milled into a flour. 🥛👩🏻‍🍳

As someone who has always tried to follow a natural, anti-inflammatory diet (free-from dairy, gluten and other nasties 🦠) I was intrigued by these allergen-friendly bad boys. After some quick research, I learnt that tigernuts are a powerhouse of plant-based nutrition. 🌱

Of all the various functional health benefits associated with tigernuts (which you can read about here), I was particularly intrigued by their ability to enhance gut health. Having suffered from digestive discomfort most of my life, I’ve always sought out ways to boost my fibre intake through a diversity of gut-friendly foods. Tigernuts contain more fibre than oats and chia, and it also happens to be the best type of fibre called resistant starch. This acts as a prebiotic, which serves as fuel for the good bacteria in your gut. Bonus! 🙌🏼

With dietary intolerances and gut issues becoming increasingly common, I was surprised by the lack of Tigernut awareness in the UK. A product that helps with these issues AND tastes fantastic surely deserves attention (in my ever so humble opinion)!

True to being a Leo, when I find something that enhances my life, I want to share it with everyone. And so strp’d was born. A range of delicious and nutritious tigernut-based products strp’d of all nasties ⭐️
